The former President Barack Obama declared the Obama family dog named Bo died Saturday struggling with cancer, saying the Obamas “lost a loyal companion and true friend.”
“For more than ten years, Bo was a gentle presence, and a constant in our lives- happy to see us on our bad days, our good days, and every day in between,” Obama said in a statement on Twitter along with a picture of him running side-by-side with Bo in the White House.
“He struggled with all the problems that came with being in the White House, loved to jump in the water in the summer, had a big bark but no teeth, was controlled with children, had great hair, and lived for crumbs around the dinner table,” he said. “We will miss him dearly. He was really what we needed and more than we ever deserved.”
Michelle Obama, the former first lady, said in a Twitter post of the family, “said goodbye to our true friend.”
“We promised our daughters that we would get a dog after the campaign trail in 2008. At that time, Bo was expected to be a companion for our daughters. We had no clue how much he would mean to the family,” she stated, adding that Bo flew on Air Force One, took part in the Easter Egg Roll at the White House South Lawn and was there when the pope visited.
“The previous year, with everyone in the house during the pandemic, no one was more pleased than Bo,” she said. “All of the family were under one roof again- exactly like the day we got him. We will always be grateful that the girls and Bo got to spend so much time together in his last years.”
