Moreover, it ended with all major social media companies banning the States’ 45th president Donald Trump’s account. Among the various companies was Twitter. On Friday, the 8th of January, his account was permanently suspended by Twitter.
This is the second week of the year 2021. Trump supporters announced to protest against the ban. It was announced on the Trump win forum. The aim was to protest in front of San Fransico’s Twitter HQ. While the building was empty, there was still the presence of police officials to protect against the mob. The Twitter employees are working from home due to the global pandemic.
It was surprising. The protest had just one protester. Instead, there were two counter-protesters to applaud Twitter’s decision.
Power of Social Media?
Twitter declared a permanent ban on Donald’s account. The Twitter account had a following of 88 million. The ban is urged by multiple breaches of rules with the further provocation of violence. Moreover, Twitter is also suspending more accounts, sharing harmful content and wrong theories across the following.
Trump has accused Twitter of colluding with the ‘Radical Left.’ While Angela Merkel -the chancellor of Germany, finds the ban problematic. She believes that giants of social media cannot determine the freedom of opinions.
Her spokesperson- Steffen Seibert, also added that the lies or provocation are indeed very problematic. But the path of dealing with such issues should be under a legal framework. Angela said she was both furious and saddened by Twitter’s action.
Other social networking giants, like Facebook, have also suspended Donald Trump’s account. Snapchat has done the same as well.
