United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres has advised all the nations to announce an atmospheric crisis or face ‘catastrophic’ results in the virtual Climate Ambition Summit held on Saturday.
The UN encouraged the countries at the meeting to “stop the attack” on the planet. And increase their focus on cutting the ozone-harming substances that drive environmental change.
Antonio Guterres also urges the nations that the world was setting out towards a “catastrophic” 3C warming. He also asked them to declare a condition of atmospheric crisis in their countries until they become carbon neutral.
Many world leaders talked at the virtual Climate Ambition Summit ranging from the smallest country’s hit by an environmental change to the world’s most exceedingly worst polluters.
Many nations aim to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Moreover, they also plan to reduce greenhouse emissions in the next ten years as their short term goal. India and China have promised to target on renewables at the summit. Britain is working to reduce its emission by 30% by 2030.
UN’s encouragement
The United Nations organised this conference to encourage nations who are not stepping up towards this global issue. It was also to create a momentum for next year’s COP26 summit. The summit will be co-hosted by United Nations, France and the United Kingdom. The event was postponed due to pandemic is planned to be held from November 1 to 12th. Some research estimates that if all the promises are fulfilled, we can restrict warming levels to 2C. Due to Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris agreement, the United States was absent from the meeting alongside Australia.
