Atletico Madrid moved a step closer to becoming the La Liga champions for the first time since 2014 following a home victory over Real Sociedad.
Yannick Carrasco put Atletico ahead after collecting Marcos Llorente’s pass, over the top of the Sociedad defence and finishing past Alex Remiro.
Igor Zubeldia scored late for Sociedad, but Atletico held on to victory.
Atletico will win the La Liga title for the 11th time in their history if they win this time. The team only have to win both of their last two matches.
They play against Osasuna– which is in 11th place– on Sunday, 16 May. Atletico will end their campaign on 23 May, playing against Real Valladolid that is placed 18th on the Spanish league chart.
Atletico is four points ahead of second-placed Barcelona, but Real Madrid is the biggest competition to Diego Simeone’s side.
Real Madrid is five points behind Atletico but has an advantage on Thursday when they face Granda away from home.
Real would also move ahead of Atletico if the two sides ended on the same points according to the head-to-head rule, i.e. Atletico cannot afford to lose any points.
For Real Sociedad, they remain fifth and in a UEFA League qualification spot.
Just behind Real Madrid is Sevilla, who won against Valencia 1-0 earlier on Wednesday due to Youssef En-Nesyri. But Atletico’s following victory means Sevilla can no longer win the Spanish league.
Barcelona’s victory hopes suffered a big blow on Tuesday when they wasted a 2-0 lead against Levante before drawing 3-3.
“There are few chances for us to win the league now,” Sergio Busquets, Barca’s midfielder, said after the game.
Kieran Trippier, who plays as a right-back for Atletico, tweeted, “Vamos! Just the result we needed tonight. We have to keep going a be at our best for the last two games.”
He added, “Congrats to Koke on an unbelievable achievement- 500 games for Atletico.”
