New York state has clinched a deal to legalize recreational cannabis. It will be for people above the age of 21, says a US media report.
Officials have said they hoped that this new offered law would be ending a few harsh measures. Like the excessive patrolling of minority groups for the low level of marijuana offences.
Under this Cannabis Law, a portion of the tax revenue raised by the cannabis sales would be used in investment. The grant collected by the so-called law would be for marginalized communities.
In New York, the law would create a new Office of Cannabis Management (OCM). A Cannabis Control Board would check this OCM, a memo was seen by US broadcaster CNN said.
Additionally, half of the relevant business licences would go to social equity appellants added the memo. These would include those from inhabitants influenced by the cannabis ban and minority and businesses owned by women.
Legalizing the recreational cannabis
The New York Times told that officials in the state capital, Albany, reached an accord with Governor Andrew Cuomo. The deal came on Thursday after years of futile attempts to legalize recreational cannabis.
The exact wording of the act has not been finalized at this point. But this bill could go through as early as next week. Also, if the bill gets approved, the law would be likely to come into action before the upcoming year.
A Democratic State Senator, Liz Krueger, told the newspaper that after this bill is voted on and signed. New York will be in a position to say that they finally defeated vitiating criminal justice laws. The laws fulfilled nothing but ruining people’s lives.
The deal follows the legislation of recreational cannabis for people over 21. In neighbouring New Jersey last month. Also, it will be diminishing the severity of cannabis crimes for people under the age of 21.
