For those who have always thought about what it would’ve been like to be a traveller on the Titanic, an amusement park in China is set to offer the closest experience one can ever get.
A huge replica of the sunken ocean ship is now under construction in Daying County in Sichuan city.
Named the “Unsinkable Titanic,” the replica is the exact same size as the original — 28.19 meters wide and 269.06 meters in length.
The centrepiece of the amusement park called Romandisea will have the same facilities as its namesake, including theatres, banquet halls, swimming pool and observation decks. Guests will be able to pay money to spend the night on the ship, which will be permanently docked in a basement in the Qijiang River, about 120 kilometres from the provincial capital Chengdu– about a hundred kilometres from the sea.
An inauguration date has not yet been set.
USA Today first reported on the project in 2017, when construction workers had just started the construction. A recent picture essay by news agency CNN offers a new look at construction progress on the ship.
According to CNN, it’s taken 24,000 tons of steel and cost $153.5 million to build the replica.
China’s Titanic isn’t the only replica of the original one.
Blue Star Line, an Australian company, announced in 2018 that work was resuming on the Titanic ll following a long delay. It has been popularized as an identical copy of the infamous ship, home to 840 cabins to accommodate 2,645 passengers.
The voyage was scheduled for 2022, although the company’s website hasn’t been updated since 2019. USA Today reached out to Blue Star Line for comment on the condition of the ship.
