With the help of brilliant individual goals from Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell, Chelsea defeated FC Porto in UCL Quarterfinals. Moreover, now the London side has an advantage of two goals for the reverse fixture.
On Wednesday, both teams travelled to Sevilla’s home stadium to play their fixture’s first leg. However, after a shocking defeat to West Bromwich, Chelsea responded brilliantly and delivered a great result.
FC Porto started the match without their two stars, Sergio Oliveira and Medhi Taremi. As a result, Chelsea looked relatively calm while defending in the first few minutes. Despite the absence of key players, FC Porto created some early chances but failed to make something out of them. On the other hand, Chelsea looked clueless while attacking and didn’t use the ball possession very well. But, in the 32nd minute, Mason Mount amazingly controlled Jorginho’s drilled pass and scored the match’s first goal.
Chelsea looked much better on the ball in the second half, but a few minutes later, FC Porto gained the momentum again. Moreover, the Portuguese side tested Chelsea’s goalkeeper time and time again. But, Chelsea’s defence stood their ground firmly and didn’t panic throughout the game.
As the game moved to its last few minutes, Chilwell intercepted Jesus Corona’s lousy pass and rounded past the goalkeeper to score the second goal. Now, this victory for Tuchel’s side can prove to be a morale booster and will give them an advantage in the returning leg.
How both managers reacted to the results?
Thomas Tuchel praised his side’s strong response after a shocking defeat to West Bromwich and added that it was their responsibility. He also added that his side had great results together, and it was important to win this match with a clean sheet.
FC Porto’s manager Sergio Conceicao admitted Chelsea’s superior bench strength. However, he also mentioned that he still believes in his team, and this tie is still alive.
