About eight people were killed and shot at a FedEx facility on Thursday near Indianapolis International Airport, authorities said.

According to Genae Cook, the department spokesperson, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials responded to a reported shooting on Thursday. When they arrived at the incident, they found an “active shooter even,” Genae told reporters during a news conference Friday.

“This is a disaster, but we will come through it with triumph,” Genae said through tears.

Authorities believe the suspect has died by suicide. Genae said officers do not think there is an active threat to the community.

Genae reported multiple people were killed but did not give a particular number. She added that the suspect had died, and the community is not believed to be in urgent danger.

The FedEx Indianapolis hub, the second-largest facility in the company’s global network, employs about 4,500 workers, a spokesperson told in an interview with USA Today.

FedEx released a statement after the event, saying it is working on getting some information and cooperating with authorities.

“We are aware of the tragic incident at our facility near the Indianapolis airport,” FedEx said on Twitter. “Safety of our employees is our top priority, and our wishes are with all those who are hurt by the incident.”

Rep. Andre Carson said late Friday that he talked with local authorities and was “ready to assist everyone affected by this tragedy.”

“I am devastated by the mass shooting here in Indianapolis at the FedEx hub and praying for all people killed in the incident,” he said via Twitter.

The shooting in Indianapolis happens after a pair of shootings last month- one in a cabinet-making company in Texas- and another in North Carolina that left five people dead and the shooter, a former NFL player.
