WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden is under huge pressure to help stop the brutal war between Israel and Hamas, the militant organisation that controls the Gaza Strip. Every week of airstrikes and rocket attacks, at least 212 Palestinians and 10 Israelis had been killed.
But at the same time, the USA has enormous leverage in the area and has long sought to broker a peace deal among Israel and the Palestinians; the White House is not always the most important participant right now. Here’s a look at the jobs and motivations of those engaged in the army confrontation – and people seeking to stop it. Hamas is a militant Islamic organisation that doesn’t understand Israel’s right to exist. It was commenced in 1987 by a Palestinian cleric. Due to 2007, Hamas has managed Gaza, a small patch of land bordering the Mediterranean Sea and home to approximately 2 million Palestinians.
The United States and the European Union consider Hamas, a terrorist organisation. Hamas’ plans military strategies against Israel have shifted a long way from the past few years from plotting suicide bombings to collecting an arsenal of rockets to various places to the West Bank with the Fatah Movement.
Hamas condemned the 1993 Oslo Accords, under which the Palestinians received a measure of governing authority over the West Bank and Gaza’s infrastructure, even as the PLO officially identified Israel.
Israel’s army says Hamas has fired more than 3,000 rockets at civilian targets in Israel in the current war. The Israel Defense Forces say they have intercepted approximately 90% of these with Israel’s sophisticated Iron Dome missile defence system.
